With a mission to create quirky hats that inspire and bring pleasure, Ratty Tat Hats have certainly done that.
What makes your product unique?
Ratty Tat Hats are Steampunk & vintage style hats designed and handmade by me, Karen Christie at my studio in the lovely rolling countryside of County Down. Individually named, each unique and quirky design is crafted from a new, handmade 100% heavy wool hat embellished with an eclectic mix of curiosities and vintage pieces including clock and watch parts, natural feathers, gorgeous fabrics and my distinctive hatpins. They have an heirloom quality, are finished with the Ratty Tat Hats’ inner crown branding, satin lining and each one is presented in its own hatbox. I feel each individual hat should be able to complement any outfit be it casual or smart and deliver a bit of attitude to the wearer.
What inspires you as an artist/maker?
On any given day the world around me feeds me inspiration. From architecture to nature, packaging to TV commercials. street photography to a beach walk….and it all computes and culminates in ideas at 4am….my creative hour.
How did you get started?
My passion for design has in this instance been combined with another huge influence in my life, Carriage Driving. As a successful show and competition driver I have long been enhancing hats for these equestrian pursuits, throw in a love of Steampunk, a lust for ‘ratted’ vintage cars and rusted pick up trucks, an admiration for Tim Burton’s filmography and I arrived at Ratty Tat Hats.
Why do you think it’s important to keep local?
The majority of my sales are to NI customers as they have the obvious advantage of experiencing the quality of the product first hand but I am delighted to have Ratty Tat Hats travel worldwide too!
What motto do you live/work by?
A clear passion, a resolute determination, a can-do spirit; these are the rods for creating a great mark.

Tailor Made Ratty Tat Hats are a very popular aspect of my work. When designing a bespoke hat I like to capture a little essence of the wearer in the creation. I delight in seeing my designs worn on a regular “can’t be without it” basis.
